Europe’s digital economy currently stands on a crossroads. The regulatory framework varies across the EU and there is little streamlining with other strategies and existing policies. Many legal barriers to the digital single market in Europe remain in place, especially in areas such as data protection, e-privacy, copyright, or e-commerce.

Through the creation of Digital Single Market, an ambitious project proposed in 2015, Europe can gain a wide range of economic, social and environmental benefits. It can also boost long term growth rates and competitiveness which may be especially important for the economies of Central and Eastern Europe as it could provide access to a large market in fields and sectors where these countries could potentially develop their competitive advantage.

In this month's infographic, we look into the DSM's likely fate in 2018. There are 12 legislative packages still open, some of them rather complex. Four of them were chosen by SAPIE as the ones to keep an eye on. These four are copyright, telecommunications package, e-Privacy and platforms-to-business relations.
